Basic Technique playing flute

There is some presumption that the music is owned by professional musicians or academics only. Almost all the crevices of human life has been filled with music since a thousand years ago, and there’s no reason that music only being owned by specific level of people.

Enjoying music, of course different with playing music, above assumption might come out specific about orchestra music instrument such as saxophone, trumpet, and flute. But then these kind of music instrument not just being used for orchestra, but could be played in single. Today I’d like to review about flute, specifically in basic technique of playing flute.

Flute is music instrument that being played by blowing or flowing air through the instrument hole and making a good harmony out from it. Playing the flute requires breath regulation and the player should be in good health (not catching a cold).

The first basic technique is doing tuning. Do the tuning at A = 440 Hz (or 442 Hz) after installing your flute. The easiest thing to do this is by using a digital tuner.

Before doing some practice, first do some warm-up (heating) by sounding long tones one by one. Starting from the tone in the B octave down to the lowest C note. Then start again blowing B in the middle register tone to tone C in the middle. This exercise helps you to be able to blow a steady tone.

If you think those warm-up are not effective cause requires some times, you could also do a warm-up practice with playing a short song that you thing are easy to be played, do this for about 5-8 minutes. This warm up practice could help you master the song and the flute itself such as Gemeinhardt flute.

After warm-ups, you can try to practice scales (scale & arpeggio). Or play a chromatic scale which also help to train your fingers respond. Then, after practicing scales, you can begin to practice the song, etude, or you want to practice repertoire, its all up to you.
